COLLECTION MATTERS

Welcome

For your information, the Museum is professionally managed through the Service Delivery portfolio of the Ashburton District Council with which the Society has a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The Museum has been a Department of the Ashburton District Council since 2014. Other than District Council archives, the Society owns and holds in trust for the people of the Ashburton District (and nationally), the Collection housed in the Ashburton Museum. This Collection is the result of collecting significant social history for over 135 years. Museum management reporting is carried out through regular Service Delivery full council meetings and Collection matters through Society committee meetings. The Society and the District Council have been ‘partners’ since the formation of the Society in 1958. Check out the summary society history here.

As owners and trustees of the Collection, the AMHSoc works closely with the professional team at the Ashburton Museum in all matters that involve the Collection. The Society is currently (2022-2023) in the process of reviewing and updating the constitution and collection policy to align with future changes in the Incorportated Societies Act of April 2022. We are also reviewing our agreements with the District Council for the care of the permanent collection.
